I did a lot of trial and error before realizing I’d been spending about a week on the same step and not making any progress. So I decided that in the interest of moving forward with learning, it’d be better to just quick follow the video example to complete this step, and not fuss over details any longer than I already had.

Sometimes that is the best course of action. Moving forward is better then getting stuck and giving up.
