First Texture Challenge - Chess Scene

Here’s my Eevee render.

I have had a couple of issues:

  • I can’t use the Subdivision Surface modifier on my King. Blender just becomes unresponsive. Once I choose the option in the modifiers the selection remains open and the UI does nothing. My CPU and Memory are still showing low utilisation.
  • I applied the Subdivision Surface modifier to my pieces after I had appended them to my scene - this seemed to break the linking with similar pieces. Also I had to apply it to each piece individually rather than the linking applying it to other linked pieces. Are these behaviours expected?

The subsurface division was just taking a long time. Reduction of the poly count on the king made a huge difference - I remodeled the crown to massively reduce the poly count.

It is looking very good.

If the computer becomes unresponsive it is usually being asked to do more than it can handle.

It might be the king has some odd geometry the subdiv does not like?

It all depends on the original mesh of your objects.
Mostly a subdivision modifier of factor 2 is more than enough.
Try to keep your modifiers on, as long as you can!
Before applying them, it is better to save a version of your project.

  • You King can have some mesh problems. So best to clean your mesh, merge doubles etc…
