This one frustrated me because I kept deleting the face underneath the cutout. I finally figured out my problem and I am sharing that with others in case they also are having this problem. I had connected my face to one of the edges I was cutting out. Not sure how I managed that but I did. I ended up starting from scratch and comparing each model and found my problem that way.
