Extrusion and Shearing issues SOLVED .... Apply transforms got me again!

I’m having major issues with this section…

The ctrl-Right click extrude doesn’t stay uniform like it does in the video :

and using the Shear tool (both from shortcut and toolbar) between each extrude puts an obvious scale in my extrude :

Iv’e tried searching for online answers but most go way off on a tangent and don’t explain why it’s not as simple as it was in the video.

Any help much appreciated!
