After sharing my level design and vision for the zombie runner I spent a lot of time uv mapping and texturizing my models.
here is a picture of one of the grave stones in my game and I wanted it to be quite real looking and I wanted the R.I.P to really pop like it was engraved and I didn’t want it to be on the model as that would have been more triangles than a toblerone even after a brexit.
so how do we do this?
this is my UV map of the gravestone so I take this into Gimp:
next we want to invert the colours so lets get trippy
WWoah!!!
the next couple of steps:
nearly there no hang in there with me its worth it.
so we need a little blur to make the edges stand off the original image when we take it into unity.
I only apply a blur strength of 2 which is the smallest amount without the blur it didn’t seem to stand out enough but it may differ for other images whether any blur is needed.

next we use the gimp filter to Map -> Bump Map
here is where you need to play with the different options, being completely honest this is my first time bump maping and
I need to find out what they all mean for the bump map but from first look the main options are depth and elevation.
apply your settings and lets export this ready for our texture in unity.

here is the bump map from gimp it gives it so much depth
once imported into unity we need to change from a sprite to normal map and apply this.

so with my material selected which is my uv map I now want to add the normal map in the main maps from what I read from the docs the secondary maps can add more detail but I haven’t played with that yet.
and here is the finished product:
and as if like magic it would look like the model had been made to look like that. its a small job with a big impact to designing objects.
if anyone knows a better way could they tell me as I am just learning this method, I liked this and I wanted to share it so that other people might have more options when it came to designing models to look how they want it to.
thanks for reading, if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
