El Board de Chess

The Shinyness will probably feature heavily in all renders now that i know how to do it…sorry

This looks really nice, well done.

Minor note, but the light reflection looks a bit odd on the white square central to the picture, e.g. looks like it’s missing, or as if the white square is on top of the reflection…

Thanks Rob! The reflection thing was iintentional but maybe just doesn’t look so good. I turned down the specular hardness and intensity of the white material so that it wasn’t as shiny as the black. Trying to make it appear as if the board is made of 2 different things.

Thanks for the feedback

Ahh! I see…

I have literally just picked up a wooden cheese board that was behind me and have been holding it up to the light to see how the light reflects in the RealWorldTM etc, it’s made of two different types of wood but I can’t really replicate the light source as intensely as in your screenshot for comparison.

I think the reflection does look good, it’s just that closest white square where it seems to disappear, yet on the white square diagonally behind it it does have a reflection etc… just makes it look a little bit like its missing I guess, I am by far no expert so feel free to ignore me

With the wooden board I have here, using the sunlight coming through the window, not really ideal but the light does reflect (not even sure if that’s the right word now!) across both colour squares but has a slightly different pattern on one of the wood types…

I guess if the black squares are high gloss finish and the white are more of a matt that would effect your reflections, but then it wouldn’t appear on the first white square either would it?

In any case it does make it very atmospheric

I see your point. I think i need to learn what all these material options do to actually understand what I’ve done to make that. Some more understanding and tweaking of reflectivity/specularity should make it more realistic  Rather than me just twiddling knobs

Perhaps, if you want to, pop up your iterations into this topic so we can all see how it changes as you learn some new bits and bobs.

I will be keen to see it evolve. I haven’t looked at Blender myself yet so all of this kind of thing is very useful and also inspiring

Sure thing. I’ll probably be getting on with the Piece modelling soon and then when i’ve got some to add to the board I’ll look at the material effects again

This really is an extremely fun and inspiring course

I will look forward to seeing what you create

This seems more realistic. I turned the specular light intensity way down and put the hardness back to 50. It makes more sense that the matte material would only have the diffuse light with a tiny amount of specular brightness from the reflection.

Definitely looking better, in my uneducated opinion

Part of the problem for myself is that I dont have any reference to compare it to other than the wooden board I mentioned.

Just still something about that white square… lol… sorry…

With pieces, i think it looks cooler if the whole thing is shiny
