Edit mode on multiple objects

Apologies if this is a dupe.

Whenever I need to manipulate multiple objects together, eg create a join between them using Bridge Edge loops or remove Vertices by distance, I have to join the objects together using ctrl J first and then go into edit mode.

I’ve noticed in the videos that this step for joining the objects in object mode gets missed so wondering if it’s a change to recent versions in Blender or if I’m doing something wrong? Anyone else getting caught out with this?

This is probably one of the most common problems encountered in video 3 of the Blender Environmental Artist course. So no you aren’t alone. Also, this ability is new from Blender 2.80

Now I am confused!

You can not merge vertices when two objects are selected!
You need to join them.
You can in edit mode add more objects (as mesh) so you can merge them if needed.

You can not.

Simple test. Make two cube objects, select both go to edit mode. Chose a vert or loop from each mesh, try to join. They will not.

To interact mesh data it needs to be joined into one mesh.

Multiple objects all in edit mode at the same time, can independently have their own mesh data altered, but not connected.
You can however use snapping, say to vertex, and snap a vert of one object’s mesh to the vert of another object’s mesh. With can be very helpful for lining things up or similar requirements. Even when snapped to identical locations, as separate mesh object those verts will not merge. Joining required.

Thanks, makes total sense when you think about it.

Hmm, looking back at my answer I realize that I wasn’t clear, My apologies for that. When I said “this ability is new” I was referring to the ability to edit multiple objects in Edit Mode at the same time. Prior to v2.80 (possibly v2.79 as I never used that one), you could only enter edit mode for the active object. So what I was trying to say is that there is not a previous version in which you could join mesh data from different objects.

Sorry for the confusion.
