I am on the pillar portion of the course Complete Blender Creator: Learn 3D Modelling for Beginners
I noticed that the instructor was able to immediately duplicate the mesh that he made after building the pillar with the mirror modifier but I don’t have that option when I clicked shift D it takes points of the mesh, but it doesn’t allow me to duplicate the full mesh
Please give us a clue, visual reference and the lecture time.

The screenshot can be done by Blender itself, via the ‘Window’ menu bar top left hand side.
On that menu drop down is ‘save screenshot’.

You are trying to duplicate the pillar in OBJECT mode?
It just makes a duplicate, including all the modifiers, as shown in the lecture.
If making the duplicate does not work as in the video, and as above mentioned while in Object Mode, please show what it does create, what you describe as ’ points of the mesh’ not the full item.
