Delete Vertices in Blender

The instructor showed that I could just choose half of the mesh object and then delete all of the vertices in that half by clicking Delete. However, when I try so, it only delete part of my vertices (not all). I had to choose that half and delete many times before it really delete all of those vertices. Is there anyway I can choose all vertices I want to delete at once. Am I doing anything wrong (which is why it did not delete all vertices)?
Thanks.

Sorry, was recently using 2.79. You need to hit Z then select wireframe. Then you can select all the way through. I would also recomend using b-select whenever possible.

Or Ctrl+Z to toggle X-Ray to select everything that is behind as well
