Music and sound is essential to games. Well designed sound has the power to create mounting tension, feelings of triumph or just about any emotion. Think about the big monster fights in the Monster Hunter series or the music from Arathi Highlands in WoW (or YouTube them and get ready to be impressed). When you loose an arrow in a game and experience a satisfying whhoosh-thud-boing, it immerses you in the experience, it helps convince you of the illusion. Conversely, poorly executed sound can make a game seem cheap and amateur.
I’m very aware that I’m not musically gifted yet music and sound design is made up of a set of skills that can be learned. I’m not intending to become a sound designer but with guidance I’m sure I could avoid common mistakes and make use of simple techniques. As well as it being a gap in my knowledge, it seems to be a gap in the market. Is this a gap that needs to be filled?
