I am just wondering why you add a simple shape to a control bone. Is there a benefit of doing that down the line?
Recognition mostly.
In a larger model and more complex one you will have a lot more control bones and in this case its easier to identify whilst you are learning using a cone.
Once you get into character modelling you can make control bones look a lot different and many of the character rigs use them for example to rock a foot back and forth without needing to use all the bones individually from the shin to the toes.
Hope this answers your question
