I left a review on Unity giving the course a good review but giving it a score of 4.5 stars saying something along the lines that it’s a wonderful course for beginners and people looking to familiarize themselves working within Unity. I later received a response by the GameDev.tv Team asking what they could improve upon to get that last half of a star. I didn’t know where to put this suggestion so I decided here is as good of a place as any.
My one and only suggestion is kinda a big one potentially could become it’s own course but it’s the lack of showing the overall logic and design process of game production. Iunno if I am using the correct terms here as I am still just a student at this point but what I mean is there’s a lack of going over the process of design the game system architecture and system interactions before we even begin coding.
I understand that the main focus of the course is to get students up and running with coding and using the tools within Unity however I think having a couple lessons before we actually load up Unity and start a project where the instructor sits down and goes over how to think about creating a flow chart and class interaction scheme might really benefit the students in developing their own games in the future and keep everyone on the same page through the project. Aside form that I think it’s really just best practices.
Right now I am currently taking the RPG Combat course and I am really enjoying the level of in depth planning of systems and architecture going on in the course. It is much easier for me to create my own flow charts and schemes in this course for my own charity and as such I haven’t been lost even though the course itself is much more advanced. In the 3D and 2D courses I would often try and flow chart or create interactions between classes that often while working, were completely different solutions than what was expected from the Instructor’s example.
Overall however I am very pleased with the experience I have had with the GameDev.tv courses, the instructors, and community. I will be changing my review score to a 5/5 to better reflect this.
