I have mirror modifier still on and tried selecting all and clear sharp. nothing happened. Is it the modifier that’s stopping it?

i tried it, i can mark and clear sharp while mirror modifier is on, looks like you got some other problems there. can you give us more details? or even your project as blend file to see what is wrong?

As said mirror mod should make no difference.
Might you have something other than sharp on the edge? Perhaps a marked seam?

This can be done by Blender itself, via the ‘Window’ menu bar top left-hand side.
On that menu dropdown is ‘save screenshot’.
Also, include the lecture time and name/number that is relevant to the problem/issue.
