Choice of pencil for shading

During the shading of the 3D grenade, you suggested that you could shade the outline and then use the fill tool to fill in the middle.
I have tried this and the fill tool ends up filling the whole page. Any suggestions ?
I made a new layer for the shading , went round the edge with a thick pencil shading.

I’m guessing I’m maybe not using the right brush to shade round the edge of the drawing ?

you must be on the same layer in order to fill also it must be a closed circle. It could be that the pencil has some transparency which may be stopping it working
