So I went to sculpt the hand and the mirror of it was not sculpting. I went back and redid the process of creating a new hand. I created the cube and rotated it into position. I created the mirror of it and applied the object to the torso . I reset the rotation and scale. I added the subdivision surface modifier. Then I started doing loop cuts and editing the cube. Everything was working there. When I went into sculpt mode and used grab to start adjusting the object the mirror stopped mirroring the main object. Not sure if I missed a step. If anyone has any advice that would be great. I am going to continue trying to figure this out though.

Sorry everyone I figured it out, I did not set the world origin to 3d cursor
