That suggests you have duplicate geometry, or some back to front faces.
The overlays dropdown menu has a useful tick box to highlight problems with Face orientation. Then recalculate outside if red shows up by Alt N; recalculate outside.
Selecting all and pressing M, merge by distance should catch most extra duplicated geometry if that is the problem.
Try those first.

As NP5 said, clean up the mesh first.
- Have quad faces (faces with only 4 vertices.
- Merge vertices
- connect vertices to edges
