Extruding vertices in 2.93.5 has no effect. I can only draw… any suggestions?

Always use a screen dump. You can do that, MAIN MENU > WINDOW > Save Screen shot

Welcome to this site. We will try to help. But your question is like saying my car (It is blue.) won’t start, why not?
We need images of the full Blender window, As FedPete explained how too. It tells us what mode you are in for example.
