Can I Develop a Game All Alone?

Hey guys !
I have queries…
I wanna Get Into Game Development…
I have strong knowledge of c++ , C#, java , Javascript…
The problem is i don’t have Game Designers/Artists To work with
i mean if i do Game Programming I don’t have anyone who design stuff For me
Is It possible For a single person to do Game Design and Programming all Alone?

It sure is! Just look at Stardew valley, a bestselling game, and all the pixel art, story, and programming was done by one person. I think another example is Unturned: a zombie survival game with simple sprites.

I know it is a hard task, but try starting with a simple idea and making a GDD (Game Design Document). Determine if you want the game to be 2D, 2.5D, or 3D. And if you know nothing about the design you can look on Udemy for courses pertaining to the style to want to design things in. For 3D I recommend the blender course by Ben and if you a pixel art course I recommend Pixel Art for Video Games by Marco Vale.
Also, with your first simple game use simple graphics/sprites. Maybe try doing pixel art which is a lot simpler than 3D/realistic art.
If you want to you can design a game by yourself!
Good luck! :+1:

I saw your topic question and like ScoobyDoo, my first thought was the guy who did Stardew Valley.

Have you heard of a game called Axiom Verge? Also a solo developer.

There’s also the guy who did Flappy birds (regardless of whether we like the game or not, art style etc, he was a solo developer nonetheless).

So yes! It’s possible! (with lots of hard work :D)

Another example I like to refer to is Undertale. Toby Fox did all of the coding himself, all of the music, and outsourced some of the graphics to his artist friend. He did it all in 3 years on a 50,000 budget (I think that was mostly for food lol)

Design is intensely complex. However, whether you’re just programming, making the art, or the sound, understanding game design helps for all aspects of creating the game. An idea can go either good or bad from this conception phase. Having a clear Game Design Document, a clear view of the goal/finished product, dedication, and the ability to accept criticism are keys to getting better in this aspect. Apart from actually developing games, one thing that makes you better at game design is actually playing games.

There are heaps of talks from indie artist game developer Jonathan Blow on Youtube, and watching these lectures makes it possible to be one step closer to making a great game. It doesn’t need to be an enormous game to be successful (Papers Please is a tiny game conceptually but such a masterpiece, again, developed by one guy.)

However, if you’re worried you can’t make a great game without people dedicated to these roles, the collaboration topic and Discord groups have plenty of budding young artists who would love to help you. I’ve been involved in quite a few collaboration groups here and people are generally nice about it.

But another game that had one dev was E.T. for Atari lol.

Hey Thankyou For Your Answer
So i wanted to know that lets think thati have game designer/artist
so now i have to go directly into game programming ? I have nothing to learn in designing?

What do you say?

I think everyone working for a game should understand a little about game design. How to avoid wasting players time (unless that’s the point), how to make things satisfying, user friendly, etc etc etc. Even the coder needs to be concerned about how to make bad events punishing and good events satisfying: EG making attacks feel weighty or fast, lining up all the hitboxes and invuln windows so that you feel happy when you succeed (Shovel Knight, Dark Souls and Monster Hunter spring to mind), etc etc.

But if you have a dedicated designer or artist, it becomes less and less about trying to micromanage and more about doing the very best in your chosen field.
