Can I build 2d games in 3d?

So, I was trying to make a 2d platformer with 3d shadows and effects in it, the background which I put in my work took a lot of time on photoshop.

Work in 2d

Today I just touched 3d a little bit and I was baffled as I could have done it all in a lot less time than what I did before.

Work in 3d

But I am also a newbie here, so don’t know if it is a better approach or not ?
Especially when I am going to add a personality to characters and environment later, I am now really really confused as where to work, 2d or 3d, any senior guide me please?

I think you wanted to go for a 2.5D game?
Mabye look at this a bit;

Its just 3d with different camera angles and limited movement.

And if you really mean 2d characters(sprites) in a 3d world, you might want to look into somehting like this;

If you mean which GameDev course you should follow, 2d or 3d, i would advise taking them both,
after that you surely have learned enought to make either of the previous named examples in Unity.
