BullCowGame could not be compiled

I downloaded the file and when i try and run it it says it cant be compiled try rebuilding form source manually. The path is Desktop\Unreal\BullCowGame\BullGame

You need to install a compatible .NET SDK. Installing Visual Studio Community 2019 with the following settings should do that

I have the same problem. I have tried, but no luck.

I am assuming that the bit involving Incredibuild is not an issue.

Here is a screenshot of my VS 2019 workload selection for C++ games:

I am running UE 4.26.2 on Windows 10.

When I installed VS 2019, I got this error:
InstallationError

I tried going to the popular solutions etc. but could not get past the signin, which would sit there, for hours, spinning its loop. I suspect, though, that this is not part of my problem.

I have given all my directories, both in C:\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_4.26, and the starter kit, full permission for whoever to do whatever.

And yet…

Well you could try just installing the .NET SDK yourself I’d suggest the latest version of .NET 4.6

I have already tried that; I think it was .NET 4.8.

I tried installing the SDK again, as per your suggestion, having reinstalled vs 2019 and epic game launcher etc.

Then, a miracle occurred. Success!

While it was what you suggested that got me over the line, the actual cause of the problem is opaque to me. For example, why does it need a separate installation of the .NET SDK? Why did installing the .NET SDK not work, the first time I did it, 2 days ago? There must have been something else wrong, too. Given the number of people who have this problem, as well as the number of different remedies that seem to work, it is a very delicate system to get going where not every element has an orthogonal effect upon the outcome.

I have been trying to do this for over 2 days now. I was at my wit’s end, but now can proceed.

I am writing this just to list what I did to get it working, that others might benefit. I am not sure that this will work for others. Neither am I sure that some of what I list is redundant, or unnecessary, but it worked for me, in the end.

  • System: Windows 10
  • Unreal Engine Version: 4.26.2-15973114+++UE4+Release-4.26
  • Install Visual Studio 2019, with the “Games Development in C++” settings as in a panel above.
  • Set folder and file permissions in :\Program Files\Epic Games\UE_4.26 to enable full control for everyone. ( This might not be necessary. )
  • Set folder and file permissions in the BullCowGame-starter-kit directory to enable full control for everyone. ( This might not be necessary. )
  • Go to this website: .NET 4.8 Developer Framework ( Note that, like all things internet, this link will age; just get the latest version of .NET Framework Dev Pack. Fallback is to try the parent page: Dotnet Download. )
  • Download and install the .NET ( Note that this is despite checking the appropriate SDK box in the configuration of the installer for Visual Studio 2019. )

Dan, if you can think of anything else that might be appropriate, let me know and I can edit this post. Even its deletion is an option if you consider that to be better.

4.8 is not 4.6. A newer version is unlikely to be compatible (it’s impossible to know what a version that doesn’t exist at the time you release something is compatible).

Ticking Unreal Engine Installer selects to install 4.6.2.
