BuildingEscape Crashes on Startup

Hello I’m currently having a problem opening my Building_Escape project. After I made the code changes in this lecture, this appears whenever I try to open my project:

The error message points to UOpenDoor in my code, so I suspect it’s something to do with OpenDoor.cpp or .h. The issue is if I refactored my code, there is no way to recomplile my code for my project because I can’t open my project in the first place. It’s a real Catch 22.

I’ll send some screenshots from my code in case anyone can identify the problem there. But I still need to compile my code in my project in some way. Otherwise it will default to the code that makes it crash.

P.S. I’ve also been having an issue where VSC does not recognize the “OpenDoor.generated” library or the “OpenDoor.h” in the .cpp file. This didn’t stop the code from compiling so I left it alone for now. However VSC is not catching other mistakes (such as spelling errors, or forgetting semicolons) as a result. It would be useful to me to get it working so I can catch these errors more easily. Right now that’s a low priority issue, but if anyone knows how to fix it I’ll be grateful.

Edit: I think one of the issues was that I was including “GameFramework/Actor.h” before “Opendoor.h” in the .cpp file. I fixed it, but that won’t help me recomplie my code in my Unreal project. I still need to get around that issue.

Second Edit: I went forward with the next lecture and realized that wasn’t the problem. “OpenDoor.h” should be first in the .cpp file. I’m honestly not sure what’s causing the problem. Hopefully I’ll learn the answer soon.

You have written code in the constructor that should be in BeginPlay. A component doesn’t have an owner in the constructor so you are dereferencing a null pointer on line 16 in your .cpp

Have you followed the lecture on IntelliSense and 4.25?

That fixed a few issues but IntelliSense is still giving me errors on “OpenDoor.generated.h” and “OpenDoor.h”. Sometime the squiggles under “OpenDoor.h” disappears (like in the screenshot below) but IntelliSense still detects an error in the file on the lefthand side.

I also moved the code out of the contstuctor but I still can’t open my project to recompile the code. That is the biggest issue I am facing so far, since I can’t follow along with the lectures unless I can open my project. Do you know a way around that issue?

Inside the same c_cpp_properties.json do you have anything in the includePath, specifically ones that go to your project’s Source and one to its Intermediate\Build\Win64\UE4Editor\Inc?

Okay so I gave that a try. I clicked Ctrl + Shift + B when I had my Building_Escape file selected. A Drop down menu appeared where the options were Building_Escape HTML5 Debug Build, Debug Clean, or Debug Rebuild. Unfortunately the menu closes when I try to take a screenshot of it. I clicked all the options. Debug Build and Debug Rebuild give me the same error. It says Error: Missing precompliled manifest for 'Launch'. This module was most likely not flagged for being included in a precompiled build - set 'PrecompileForTargets = PrecompileTargetsType.Any;' in Launch.build.cs to override. I still can’t open my project, so it looks like that error is preventing me from compling the code, at least on my end. Do you know how to get around this?

As for the c_cpp_properties.json, I have files that go into Source, but nothing that goes in Intermediate\Build\Win64\UE4Editor\Inc. Is that something I should include?

Edit: Actually those lines are in the file. I added double slashes to your filepath and found them with ctrl + f. I’ll post a screenshot below.

There should be more. You need “ProjectNameEditor Win64 Development Build”

Like I said, you need to compile.

That’s not your project’s. If you look in your Building_Escape folder there’s an Intermediate folder. It needs that “Intermediate\Build\Win64\UE4Editor\Inc” one as (as you’ve found out) the Engine’s ones are already there.

I’m a little confused by your directions. I went to the intermediate folder->Build->Win64->UE4Editor->Inc and found several headers and cpp files. Are you telling me to put Intermediate\Build\Win64\UE4Editor\Inc in there? Where do you want me to put that line?

When you said there should be more than just the three options Debug Build, Debug Clean, and Debug Rebuild, I’m not sure what ProjectNameEditor Win64 Development Build is. I assumed it was a plugin but I couldn’t find it in the VSC Marketplace. Can you explain further?

To the list of includes in the includePath.

It’s one of the build tasks Unreal provides. No additional extension required beyond the C/C++ one.

Okay so I added that line to the includePath. It didn’t seem to do anything since I’m still getting error messages in OpenDoor.cpp and OpenDoor.h.

As for the build tasks, it looks like I made a mistake. There were more options there, I just missed the middle text and thought the Clean, Build, and Rebuild tasks were the same. I used Development Build and Rebuild several times on my source folder to solve the compiler errors I was getting in the console. I moved my include statements around to get to where I am now. I’m not sure if any of those actions created the new problem I am facing. When I try opening my project, this pops up:

After I click yes, the project tries to load and then I get this popup:

No matter how many times I build or rebuild, I still get this error. The VSC compiler is bringing up a problem that might be the source of this issue. It look like it compiled, but I spotted an error line that reads error C2039: 'FirstPlayerController': is not a member of 'UWorld'. Is this the souce of the problem? Either way, how can I get around this issue? I’ll post a screenshot below:

Yes it is and you haven’t included the line is complaining about in your screenshot which coincidentally stops one line short. Could you please show that line? Though it sounds like you’re missing “Get”

I found the line and through my own initiative, I commented it out. My first priority was to get my project up and running so I wanted to see if that would work. Here is the code for your reference:

I commented it out, recompiled the code, and to my surprise the project works again!

That was the biggest problem I had and I’m so happy it all works! But if you think we should keep going with the IntellSence errors and that last line of code, I’ll hold off from marking your answer as the solution. I feel like I can solve that FirstPlayerController() error on my own and I think I can deal with the IntelliSense error for the time being. But if you think you can solve it, I’ll be extremely grateful if you can get Intellisence to work for my Unreal Code.

I’m not sure if anyone else following this course ran into a similar error with their Unreal Project. Even if its a small number of people, the error really stopped me from continuing with the lectures. Maybe the gamedev team could create a video lecture in case anyone else runs into this problem. That’s just my suggestion though. Thanks you so much for helping me with this problem. I liked how quick your responses were and how respectful you were during our conversation.

I think I would need to see your includePath and the “errors” that VS Code is complaining about. If it’s saying it’s a problem with not being able to find a “.generated.h” then that would be the Intermediate folder not being listed in the includePath.

Are you talking about IntelliSense or crash caused by dereferencing GetOwner in the constructor?

I’m referring to the crash I had at the beginning of this thread. When I complied my code it’s wasn’t the game that crashed on begin play. It was the entire project. That was a huge error that prevented me from continuing with the lectures. I wouldn’t have known what to do until you showed me Ctrl + Shift + B > projectnameEditor Development Build. If this happens to anyone else I can see it being a major problem, especially if they put alot of work into their project. I was even debating whether I should start over with the Building Escape section before your help, because from my perspective my project was gone.

With the cpp file, IntelliSense is showing a small squiggle at line 1. I’m not sure what that means.

To perhaps clarify some things, just in case you’re still wondering.

This is because you were dereferencing a null pointer. The constructor is ran when the project gets loaded which is why the owner is null it doesn’t exist yet.

When you compile you are creating a .dll which is a dynamic linked library. When you load your project Unreal is going to load that and the constructors of UObject types you’ve created are executed.

It’s not going to affect anything beyond being able to load the project. As soon as the error in the constructor is fixed (dereferencing a null pointer) and compiled then the project can be loaded and everything should be as it should.


I’m not seeing anything wrong with that. Only thing I can think of is that the path might be too long. Was it ever working?

Not for Building Escape, but I think it was working for BullCows project. I’m going to check the project and let you know.

Edit: So I discovered something interesting. My BullCows project code is working with IntelliSence. I went to the ccp properties and found a filepath similar to the one you suggested. But instead of it going to my project, it read C:\\Program Files\\Epic Games\\UE_4.22\\Engine\\Intermediate\\Build\\Win64\\UE4Editor\\Inc\\Engine

I copied and pasted the file into Building Escape. For a moment everything seemed to be working, but then the errors reappeared (The same ones as last time). I’m going to look pack to the BullCows lectures to find more clues.

Edit2: My journey took my back to the video you suggested at the beginning to forum. It feels like I went in one big circle. Even though I repeated everything in the 4.25 IntelliSence Bug video, the error isn’t correcting itself. I’m at a bit of a loss with what is going on. What information do you need to help me solve this problem?

Did you remove it in place of the other? You should have only added the extra one.

I added both filePath’s but it still doesn’t seem to be working. Maybe I made a mistake when I was making changes to the include path or defines folder. I’ll send you a list of my incude path folders and defines to see if the problem’s there.

Thanks! That actually fixed it somewhat. The UOpenDoor heading is now appearing green next to the functions. Although IntelliSense is still giving me errors in the same locations. There’s a squiggle under #include "OpenDoor.generated.h" I think if had the right includes, this error will go away. I’ll send a screenshot:
