Blocking Out the Ogre

See step by step progress at my repo

This is my second time through the course. I stopped due to frustrations in sculpting and other time constraints. I am back again attempting to overcome my limitations and develops some skills. I am considering purchasing a drawing tablet to attach to my laptop to use a pen instead of a mouse. What do people recommend? Looks like there are a few major brands. In those there are two different styles: black track pad style or draw on the monitor style. Other than price what seems to be the pros and cons for this?

I’ve tried the track pads and for me I found the process of not looking at what I was actually moving my hand on to be far too irritating. For others, it’s simple to overcome.

I myself bought a digital display drawing tablet, more specifically the Huion Kamvas 16 (2021) and thoroughly enjoy it whenever I bring it out!

I did not have the same experience with my track pad, I thought it very easy to get used to. I bought a cheap medium sized wacom and did not regret it. But a large trackpad is better, and a digital display one is probably the best. It all depends on how much money you’re willing to spend.

The Kamvas 16 is a bit out of my price range.

I got a 9" diagonal Wacom. The $99 price tag at Best Buy was not too painful. I am guessing it is a combination of the new tool and being my second time through the course (experience) it is going a bit better for me now. Got to get the Wacom configured for Blender. If one of the pencil buttons was set to be the middle mouse button I would be able to ditch the mouse for sculpting. Right now I am still using that to move around my scene

You can adjust Tablet Properties in the Wacom panel and turn on Emulate Three Button Mouse in the Blender properties. You don’t need to use your mouse to move around the viewport. Using combinations of ctrl, alt, shift, and the pen you can do most things that a mouse can do. Grant shows you how to set up and use your Graphics Tablet in this video.

Turns out the Wacom tablet has a service that runs in Windows. For some reason that service, set to Automatic, didn’t start after installation and turning off and on again 3 times. Customer support ran me to the services control panel. As soon as I started the service the settings app popped up and I am able to configure it now.

I now just need to get used to the motions. Tap = click, Float = Move mouse, one button set to ctrl, the other to Shift to go with the floating. I’ll go through this video and see what his recommended setting are.
