Blender Creator Course - Bevelling

Hi

I am hoping someone can help me, I am following the complete Blender Creator course on Udemy.

I am 4 minutes into lesson 25 (in section 2) and am trying to bevel the edges of my pillar. In the tutorial bevelling seems to get rid of the edge between the outer edges of the bevel (rounding off the corners), where as mine seems to leave the corner in place.

I am brand new to Blender so sorry if I haven’t given any relevant details.

thanks for any help with this.

Good explanation, but difficult to say exactly what happens. But most student have problems here due to:

  • Duplication of objects and or vertices (e of extrusion problems). In edit mode select all vertices and do a merge by distance → m command.
  • Check for inner faces, by going into X-Ray mode
  • Check mirroring

Hope this helps and ask again!

As FedPete has mentioned, it looks like classic double geometry, this section is a very common studen problem as it is the place they first encounter it.

There is a chance you have two ‘objects’ in the identical space, which is easy to solve by moving the other one away to the side or similar.

Though it is much more likely double geometry created during cancelled extrusions,
Select all with A and then press M, and pick ‘by distance’. That usually sorts it all out.

Explanation.
When you start an extrusion, pressing E, new geometry is created immediately.

Then it waits for an instruction of where to move it to.

If, as many do, For some reason you escape or right click etc to cancel the tool, perhaps to think more about the next move, it only cancels the next movement part of the E extrude you instructed, not the first instant part of the new geometry creation.

This is also why the merge by distance sorts it out. As the new geometry never got told to move anywhere, it is sitting right on top of the geometry it was created from. It is why you are not aware of it as well! There can be other signs like ‘hashing’ if whole faces are fighting for the same exact space.

If aware you are canceling a started extrusion, also do a Ctrl Z, undo. That undoes the first pressing of E, the creation of the geometry.

Hi Fedpete

Thanks very much for your help - its really appreciated, the merge by distance command has solved the problem.

Thanks again for your help

Thanks for the reply NP5

It was the merge distance that solved the problem.

Thanks for the details about extruding as this was definitely my problem, I hadn’t realised I was still creating geometry - i had just been right clicking out of extrusions when changing my mind rather than undoing them.

Thanks for your help
