So I am working with blender 2.8 here and I must say they changed some of the fundamentals of selecting 
If you like clicking left to select then I urge you to give blender 2.8 a go. Also I’m working on a laptop (macbook pro) and I really like to manipulate the object with the trackpad instead of a mouse. I don’t know if that will keep being my favourite tool but right now it has my preference. 2 fingers to rotate around, 1 finger to select, click 2 fingers to reset, click one finger to confirm.
I am searching a bit to make everything work because it is a bit different of what Michael tells and demonstrates, but with his clear instructions of what I am supposed to be doing I’m finding my way around blender 2.8 as a complete beginner and I really like the new way to handle stuff.
