It seemed more of a challenge to get good edge flow around the notch with a moderate poly count than a low count.

Yes!
But probably you have added the notch at a random mesh location.
Now knowing, this can have a difficult outcome. The next time look for a ‘smarter’ mesh location place to put the notch. To give the boolean operator a better outcome.

Seems that using boolean operations is an exercise called “fix the topology” 
.
