When I try to bevel, it doesn’t hit both sides and a layer stays up

Standard problem many first encounter on these barrel lessons.
Extra geometry. Verts are accidentally created often as a result of not fully appreciating how the extrude command adds more geometry even if you think you canceled the instruction.
Solution. Edit mode, Vert view, wireframe mode, Select all by box selection, or just press A. Then press M, choosing ‘by distance’. Usually finds all duplicate verts and merges them away and your bevelling will now work as expected.
Anything I can look out for in order to make sure this doesn’t happen in the future?
