hello! im very very new to this, but im attempting to create a custom model for a game (Dragon Quest 8), and im wondering, how do you separate specific parts from the model. i want to remove the Bandana from this model here ( to replace it with a cap of another model) but every time i use the knife or bisect i either dont cut the right joints, or nothing happens after i cut and separate! what is the simplest way to cut out specific parts without overshooting?
You plan ahead. You do not make one mesh sculpting. You make the basic body and have different hats.
It is unlikely a cap from another model will match and join up to this one, well it will take some joining But had you just modelled the head and bandanna separately, hats could be swapped.
There are various ways to select and cut parts off.
Basically do some courses that cover character modelling if you are very new to this as you say.
Hi, thanks for the advice, but heres the thing: this model isnt mine. Its merely a template i wish to edit, so i couldnt really built it this way even if i wanted to. with that being said whats the best workaround?
also, the question of separating or cutting specific parts is supposed to be for any scenario, not just this one, so if you can provide general advice on how to do that I would be overjoyed. thank you.
I would duplicate the object, and delete everything you don’t need in edit mode.
Use x-ray and mouse selection.
I got the feeling you’ve started studying Blender. Working with existing models wouldn’t be that difficult if you know your way around in Blender.
thanks so much! yeah, i started studying and im just getting used to the environment. I set myself a deadline to finish this custom model in 4 weeks as a personal challenge and tbh it is really fun even though its hard
Select the area you want to copy Press Y enter. It is now a separate unconnected set of verts. Then shift D duplicate it, then move it a fixed known distance like 1 on the X axis. That way it is easy to put back onto the original. So long as you do not move the connecting edge verts when remodelling it.
