Short test run with vertex groups, under control of an armature with three bones.
The animation was captured during a manual record session. So quick and dirty.
I didn’t want to un-rig and rig again my Lego puppet.
Instead of deleting all the groups, I just edited them instead. I think what you wanted was silly and would a waste of time and I would not do in practice. I think editing what was automated was a better learning experience. Only the shoulders needed some work. Most everything else I changed a few verts on the edges. Now it works great.
