Baking Normals Issues

Hi all,

I have a real issue with baking my normal maps. I’m in Grant’s 3D Environment course and I’m revisiting the Baking of Normals as it went a little wrong during the course, but I battled on.

I have generated 2 basic shapes and sculpted one (high poly) with some lines, etc. and I’m trying to bake the normals to the other (low poly) one.

I have followed Grant’s video intently and this is the result I get.
I’m no expert, but I know this isn’t correct.

Would someone be able to help me out with this as it’s really frustrating??
There must be some settings I have not adjusted, but nothing that I can see
Thanks in advance

Darren

When you made the map was the original smooth shaded

Not seen this effect before that I recall, but it does line up with obvious facets.

Hi NP5,

Yes. Everything was shaded smooth.

A similar thing happened when I was doing my beams for the 3D Environments Course.

They were all over the place, which is why I’m revisiting the video to try and get a handle on things.

I’ll try a later version of Blender to see if that helps

Thank you anyway

Looking at your node setup it’s wrong. First, the color space of the image texture node should be set to non-color. Second it should connect to the color input of a Normal Map node and that node should connect to the normal of the principle shader or the displacement of the of the Material Output node. Third, we need to see the influence setting of the bake if setting up the nodes correctly doesn’t fix it. Make sure scale is applied to both meshes and you may need to add a little distance thru the extrude setting of the bake. You have it set to 0.

Hi Dwayne and NP5,

I’ve eventually figured it out.

The items in question need to be directly on top of one another

Doh!!!

That’s the critical step I had missed and not taken into account

Every day is a school day!!!
