Whenever I click on auto mirror it doesn’t seem to mirror the object. In edit mode, it’s the same object with no mirror even though a mirror has been applied.

Please give full screenshots with any questions. With the relevant panels open.
This can be done by Blender itself, via the ‘Window’ menu bar top left-hand side.
On that menu dropdown is ‘save screenshot’.

Screenshots would definitely help. In the meantime, a few things worth checking:
- AutoMirror axis is set to something useful (ie you’re not mirroring the object over itself when it’s already symmetrical along that axis). Unlikely, but possible.
- Cut and Mirror should be ticked or in most simple cases you won’t notice any difference
- Apply Mirror should be unticked so that you have an active modifier to work with
