Audio won't play for me

I got to the adding audio course, and I followed everything in the video to a tea, but for whatever reason I can’t get the audio to play in my game. I’ve tried toying around with the Play Audio settings, adjusting volume and all that, but nothing seems to be working for me.

Only ideas I have is that there’s something wrong with the audio file I downloaded, or when I open Unity it says there’s a new version available to download, but I don’t want to install that if I can’t open scenes made on an older version.

Here’s the file I downloaded btw. Hope someone has some insight before I continue with the course.

Hi Adam,

What file name extension does the sound have? Did you import the clip into Unity? Did you assign the clip to an AudioSource?

It’s a WAV file. Like I said, I did everything the instructor did in the video.

Is this the same file Rick uses in his project? If not, test a different audio clip, preferably his. If it does not work either, it could be a general problem in Unity.

Make sure the sound is not muted. See the top horizontal menu bar in the scene window and the game window.

Just tried a different audio file and double checked on the muting thing. Still nothing. So maybe it is because of the new version thing, but if it is I still don’t want to restart my progress if it won’t open after that.

What happens if you select the file in your asset folder and click on the little play button in the Inspector?

It might also be that Unity is muted in Windows or that your headphones are still plugged in. Please don’t laugh! That happened to other students.

Here are a few threads with potential solutions:

The audio plays fine in the inspector, just not in the game. I’ll check out those links though and see if they help.

Check if you have an AudioListener attached to your camera.

I do and it’s been checked this whole time.

Only thing I haven’t tried from the link is changing my platform from Android to Windows, if it’s even set to that, but I don’t know where to change that.

How are you getting on with this, @WoytilaAdam? Did you try to change the platform from Android to Windows in the Build Settings? (Select the “standalone” platform from the list and click on “Switch Platform”.)
