Art direction?

So many games receive praise for great art direction and stunning visuals but how exactly does one become great at art direction?

Are there any objective ways to reach this higher art level? I already know the basics, color theory, shapes, balance and such but how do I unlock the maximum potential to create stunning scenes and characters?

Perhaps dissecate games with great art direction and try to copy them?

At its most basic, you can replace “art direction” with “consistent art style”. Though in truth it’s a far broader subject that can go beyond art in your game.

A good way to start would be to look up what an art director does (film is a good facsimile here if you can’t find something relating to games).
