It seems to work just fine, but I am wondering what’s the reason Rick decided to use 5 instead of 1.

Rick used 5 because it might be that there is supposed to be a sprite between layer 0 and 5. If he had used 1 instead of 5, he would have to change the value for all sprites on that layer if he needs another layer between this one and 0.
To be on the safe side, he opted for 5. This way he could easily use layers 1 - 4 in case he needs them.
Did that make sense?
