I have been doing the new courses and have found it works for me. It was not a thing I had used before.
You do have to have the cursor over the new object you want to change selection to.

Yeah the cursor is over the new object, just work change it at all. I have been using Blender for about 5 years now and never had a problem with it before but now i need it well wont work.

Try a different version of Blender. I see some reports of it not working in v3 but it is all jumbled with it once being a shortcut to bring up a pie menu.

I have had this problem before. There are two instances in which this happens that I can remember. It could be that multiple objects are selected in object mode. Specifically, somehow objects are highlighted orange, but not one is highlighted yellow as a “last selected object” (I still don’t know how that happens). To fix this issue, switch to object mode, select the one object you wish to paint, then switch back to texture-paint mode and “alt”+“q” should work.

The other instance in which this happens is when I switch to texture-paint mode with no object selected. With no object selected, there is no object to jump from. The solution is the same as before, select the single object then switch to texture-paint.

I hope this helps. If not, let me know and I’ll be happy think of more solutions. :+1:
