About manual retopology

Is this size for the quads on the head fine for my dragon and is the way i have started doing the retopolgy fine or are there any obvious wrong things you can see?

With a low resolution, you can finish quickly, and be able to add more details, using loop cuts if needed.
But the model is not suitable for closeups. Even with baking solutions applied, you can see the low poly shapes.
This means the resolution of your model depends on the intended usage. Most people will show the Orc complete in a walking (dancing) scene. Then your low poly resolution is about the size of an eye, half eye.

It’s not about creating the most beautiful Orc, but to learn the process. After that, you are able to see when or how to add more details to your models. The low poly resolution is not only important for details, level of work, and or design. But also for animation, what part of the body does need more mesh data to perform smooth animations?
You need to practice more by doing a lot of projects, to get experience in making good, efficient design decisions.


If you don’t use the Orc for animation and or games, then a low poly version isn’t needed. If your hardware is good enough you can work directly on the high res (sculped Orc).

Well like anything it depends. That is probably smaller than many would do. You could probably easily get away with making 4 of those into one.

It looks good, but I think too high poly.

  • You try to have even sized faces, but not every where it is needed.
  • You need to focus on the key features of your model, eyes, mouth. Those areas need more mesh details. Those areas need to be edge loops. Which later can subdivided easily. Spaces in between are just filled in.
  • You solution is what a plug-in (auto retopo) will do for you. Without any knowledge where you need more details (loops).
  • Do the eyes first (loops)
  • Then mouth (ears?)
  • then connect the loops (fill in large areas). Try to have quad faces, but that’s nearly impossible. Watch out for poles (vertices with more the 4 edges connected).

See, the lips they are loops and subdivided. Flat surface have big faces, curved surfaces smaller faces, because of the the loop cut subdivision.

Personally i would start with less poly and add additional when needed, especially when it is for game engines.

As Grant also said, when the model requires it, you could always add a subdivision modifier on it to get a higher poly version when the subdivision keeps the amount of triangles within your boundaries.

It is much better as technique.
The bridge over the nose is to early in the process. Mouth first!

Like @MarcelTb said, lower the quantity. Use bigger faces.
Like the loop around the eye, adding more details can be quickly done, because you now created loops around (good workflow). If required, adding more details using a loop cut is then easy.

Also, in the end, will we see details of the dragon’s head? Or the complete dragon, whose eyes are tiny and details can not be seen.
It’s all about efficiency, add just the amount of details you need to make it look good. If not add details. In this process, you learn by doing a lot of projects. So your first dragon doesn’t need to be the best one. Learn the process.

There is huge subjectivity in all this. Those into games want really low poly, if you want to 3d print it is the opposite, do not reduce the count at all as baked details do not print.

So yes the higher poly your LP is the better it will look. But you can go lower poly with bigger faces than you have used if that is the end use you need, and if your computer can handle the bigger poly model in the use you want for it.

The course is about teaching you the methods so you can adapt them to your uses and needs. We can not say X is the ‘right’ face size, it just has no hard and fast rules like that. Look at the face size on that topology image FedPete added. Look round the eyes. You have a lot more faces.

What you have done, using a pole to turn etc is good as far as it has gone.
