A futuristic take on the chess pieces

So - I decided to see if it would look interesting with a bit of emission shader on parts of the pieces. Turned out like a bit of a futuristic chess set.

Yes - I have been fooling around with the compositor too, adding the “Glare” filter.

Also, as I mentioned in the QA section, I found this workorder to be easier than what Mike did:

I just wanted to share that I found it much easier to:

  1. Put all the pieces and empties and parenting together for one side
  2. Move 3D cursor to world origin
  3. Duplicate all pieces and empties.
  4. ROTATE it all around Z axis, using the 3D cursor as origin.

Ta-daa!

Then, it was possible to e.g. select all duplicated pawns, do CTRL-L and link object data and also link materials. Now it works pretty well

To be on the safe side, I also animated it…

Looks awesome!

That sparkle and shine is all from that glare filter and emission? Really cool.

 Thanks!! Yes, correct. A little overdone, perhaps, but I thought it looked cool.
And, rendered in Cycles, of course.

The “sparkling” in the animation was actually unintended. It is caused by the pieces occasionally directly reflects the light, which causes the glare filter to amplify the “spark”. I did not see this until I rendered out the rotation of the board.
