3 of 20 Games Challenge - Invaders Spin

Challenge 3 offered Space Invaders, Frogger, and River Raid. I started with Space Invaders and completed my version with a twist to the original today.

You can try it out on Itch.io Here!
Some notes I’m aware of or chose for balance:

Summary

Aliens don’t have a ‘destroy’ sound

You can keep shooting after you die

Players can accidentally click past the shop or buy something they may not want by accident

Let me know if you notice anything else that you think I may not have caught in testing, or anything you did not particularly like.

Technically I’m at 5 out of 20 games since I want to remake more than just 1 for each level of the challenge. Be sure to check out my Itch.io page itself if you want to see all of them so far, and a couple of my complete games from Courses here on Gamedev.

Next, I’ll try out making Frogger and River Raid, but I’ll also continue working on my remake of Happy Pets slowly overtime. I’m a little saddened as I constantly find myself wanting to go back to 3D but also enjoying getting a stronger understanding with Godot itself thru 2D so far. Looking forward to getting back to it though!

Well done, so much fun. I’m also looking into Godot 2D.

Lookin’ real nice! =)

One thought I had about this (partly because I’ve considered this problem in the past for my own projects) is to add a panel of “cover” toggle buttons adjacent to the shop buttons, each of which enables/disables the shop button it’s next to. I pictured the figurative “hinging protective case over the nuclear launch button.”

Since the store options don’t change, you can make [cover button status] persistent - if a player decides they don’t want to buy bunkers any time soon, they can disable the button at the end of level 1 and it will stay disabled. It’s a bit [more seamless / less annoying] than a confirmation dialog.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a game do this, but the problem you’re describing is definitely a common one out there. I think just about everyone has had that experience at some point in gaming!
