This is the Blender Collaboration 2026, week 8 challenge. Don’t be afraid to join, a lot of us are beginners. This is all to practice, have fun, learn, and get together.
This week’s subject is “80s or 90s tech”.
“80s or 90s tech” - Ghetto Blaster, Walkman, GameBoy, a rotary phone, …
The rules are simple. 1 subject, 1 entry, 1 week.
You create whatever object or scene or whatever you can think of that has something to do with the subject. It can be as simple or complicated as you want, all entries are welcome!
Post your picture here in this thread. At the end of the week, we start to vote. And if you are the winner, you may choose the next subject and win a unique badge.
I’ve been away for a long time, but this week felt like the right time to revisit my old Blender projects. I didn’t model any of these objects myself; if I recall correctly, they were generated using Hunyuan. Since I’m not great at drawing, I’ve been experimenting with Grease Pencil to bridge that gap. These renders show exactly where I left off several months ago. I’m planning to share my progress by next week.
Been working on a set of assets from the epoch a few months ago. The one difference is that I’m also adding retro feel to it. So quite low texel density (around 2px/cm). Now I’m getting back to it. Here’s what I got atm:
Experimenting with shaders to mimic hand-drawn brush strokes. Here is where I’m at. I’m looking for tips on how to get a more realistic brush feel without frame-by-frame drawing.
Not sure how this would work, but can you use a set of “brush stroke alphas” and have them appear stoke by stroke, and not have them fade in. over time. As is, it looks like a glass is filling with a liquid. I assume you move a texture or change a noise map to look through.
I am using this 1st shader for the walkman and animating color ramps throughout the timeline that fade in effect comes from the noise texture but not sure how to integrate the brush stroke alphas to this shader actually
I’m using two different procedural approaches. One is a directional wipe (XYZ) for the Walkman, and the others use Musgrave/Noise setups for a more ‘patchy’ growth. But both still have that fade in effect you mentioned.
We @BlenderCollab have a few days to vote. You can vote fast but also think slowly about design, colors, technique, difficulty, subject, realism, etc. Choose consciously and not on your entry.
The new subject week 09 “A pair of gloves” has already started. The winner of this week’s “80s or 90s tech” challenge may select a subject for next week 10 and win a badge.
@bOBaN , congratulations on your submission. It’s a beautiful product presentation.
Crisus - The good old days. Modem comes into my mind. Nice model!
consummatumest - I like your style. Could be a bit brighter.
RayMobula - The last render is very nice. I would have zoomed in a bit and placed it in a rectangle frame to see more details.
Note: I don’t want to offend anyone. I try to write down positive ideas and visions in my simple use of the English language. I am also sometimes more inspired by a particular subject or solution. I’m also learning from you!
