This is the Blender Collaboration 2025, week 38 challenge. Don’t be afraid to join, a lot of us are beginners. This is all to practice, have fun, learn, and get together.
This week’s subject is “Van life”.
“Van life”, vanlife, or Van-dwelling is an unconventional lifestyle of living in a car, van, or other motor vehicle. A person who lives in such a manner, either on a full or part-time basis, is known as a vanlifer, van dweller, car dweller, or vehicle dweller.
The rules are simple. 1 subject, 1 entry, 1 week.
You create whatever object or scene or whatever you can think of that has something to do with the subject. It can be as simple or complicated as you want, all entries are welcome!
Post your picture here in this thread. At the end of the week, we start to vote. And if you are the winner, you may choose the next subject and win a unique badge.
Started this project thinking I’d have more time, but in the end I only managed some quick texturing. It was meant to be a post-apocalyptic scene, but it turned into more of a peaceful shot of a guy enjoying life alone. The project is unfinished, so I’m not expecting much.
Again having problems with the assets lib.
While trying to avoid opening and switching projects, I used a single .blend file with two scenes inside. One for assets build and preparation and the other for the scene composition.
But after hours of not understanding on how to make an linked asset editable, especially a version build on a collection. I finally understood (again) why.
Having two scenes in one .blend file doesn’t mean they are completely separated!
An asset in scene one and linked-imported in scene two. Are basically the same thing!
Meaning, you didn’t linked it, but working on the same assets lib.
The solution is now, to split the scenes in two separated .blend files. Now a linked import from file one, is an linked duplicate in file two. I don’t like this solution, because it forces you to open two Blender projects.
And now I remember that I had these problems before and solved them in the same way.
What if you append the files you want to edit? Linking is just a projection of the original asset, while appending makes a new copy that doesn’t affect the original.
True, but if you want to change something in this linked version, you need the make it (partly) local. Library overwrite.
But it gets confusing, when this linked object is a container. Then you nee ID data > make local. Then select an item in the collection and then library overwrite. Many steps, where something easily gets wrong. Starting with the way you’ve imported it, dragging it from the thumbnail lib.
We @BlenderCollab have a few days to vote. You can vote fast but also think slowly about design, colors, technique, difficulty, subject, realism, etc. Choose consciously and not on your entry.
The new subject week 39 “Animal: Seahorse” has already started. The winner of this week’s “Van life” challenge may select a subject for next week 40 and win a badge.
It’s a fun topic and with so many different interpretations of how people experience van life. From escaping the city with no experience at all. A sort of survival and a romantic, magic life experience.
Really Nice works here. I am currently on a van Trip thats why i cant be Part of this topic. But each work here is amazing. I enjoyed See all the Progress, keep going! BTW i really Like the Community here, cool dudes:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:
@Srl1 congratulations on your entry. It has a desolate atmosphere and perhaps also a tragic thing.
FedPete - I tried to apply a lot of cartoon and 2D techniques. Had and have a lot of problems working with assets. Still don’t understand why this sometimes goes in error. Although I do read that it is buggy.
gallmerci - Colorful and magical scene. But perhaps too many styles together.
Note: I don’t want to offend anyone. I try to write down positive ideas and visions in my simple use of the English language. I am also sometimes more inspired by a particular subject or solution. I’m also learning from you!
