What you can achieve using only Primitives (Game Prototype)

Hello everyone ! I’m Tom, from France, and I’m an aspiring developer that just started the Blender course.

In the past, I had a quick go at 3d modeling using only Unity’s primitives. I was so happy with the result that I tried to make a little game out of it. Although I didn’t had the chance to finish it (my programing and Unity knowledge was very limited and I lost the motivation to learn everything by myself (until I found these courses on Udemy actually)), I still think it looks quite good. I know it isn’t Blender, but when I was asked to create something out of primitives I immediatly thought about this. So I re-opened my old project, and took a handful of screenshots to show you guys.

Of course for those starting the Blender course (such as myself), we still haven’t learned about textures, but I, too, don’t know much about textures since the ones used for this project were crudely snapped with Unity and I had no control over them. I just used them to have something that looked finished but it is actually quite rough. Oh, and there’s lighting too, but it’s terrible and I did with what little knowledge I had (as you can see there is no shadow for example).

But it is, in my opinion, a very good example of what you can achieve with little to no knowledge with 3D modeling. I have to agree with everything Micheal said on lesson 12 and I really wanted to show you that it is true. You can create marvelous things with almost nothing.

What do you think ? Everything is made out of cubes, spheres, cyllinders and capsules (cylinders with rounded edges). I think it really turned out great, I’d be really glad to do it again.

Hello Tom,

Other than being a bit dark to see, what I can see looks very nice. It also shows that low poly goes a long way with the right textures.

So I think that is a good thing to share for people to see some actual results. And it is always good to keep something regardless of how minor it is, in my opinion. I tend to rough model things that look horrible, but it gets my idea out and something to go back to later. I’ve done this on a few occasions when going back with more skill to make the objects/models even better.

Keep up the good work~

Thanks for the reply James, I guess my screen was a bit too bright. I tried on another screen and it was really dark indeed. Sorry about that.

Yeah, it’s no big deal for now. But that is one thing I hate about monitors and graphic settings because they can vary so much between people.

I am currently using a newer monitor with an older one, and I can’t get the colors or brightness to match, unfortunately. I hope my main one is calibrated properly, but that is one thing you need to watch out for when doing final products.

Have a nice day~

Wow, really nice! You did an amazing job, I cant wait until I get to that point. The textures are also very nice

Thank you Glint ! I insist on the fact that it wasn’t hard at all, it just took some imagination and lots of cubes really ! The textures were not hard to find, I picked random ones on the net (so I have no right over them, it was just an exercise).

That’s right James, and it is a good lesson ! I’ll have to be more careful about that since I especially love low lighting in general.
