What Digital Board Games Taught Me About Designing for Real Human Behavior

Hey everyone,
I’m new here but excited to be a part of this community. I’ve been involved in digital board game development professionally for a while now, and one thing I’ve consistently found fascinating is how different board games are from video games when it comes to player psychology and interaction .

Unlike many video games where progression is often based on skill or reflex, board games (especially strategy-based ones) require balancing rules, randomness, and social interaction — all in a tight loop. When these are translated into digital experiences, we have to be extra intentional about user experience, clarity, and decision flow , or else the game breaks quickly.

What’s even more interesting is how non-gamers (like educators or corporate clients) now ask for custom digital board games for teaching or training. It challenges us as devs to blend mechanics with serious outcomes — but it’s honestly a great design exercise.

Curious if anyone here has worked on game mechanics that focus more on human behavior or group dynamics rather than fast-paced play? Would love to swap notes or hear about your approach.

Looking forward to learning from everyone here.
