I did the wedge challenge by deleting a face of the cube and then combining two of the edges. I suppose this counts as overlapping vertices. However, when I try to move the combined edges, it actually moves them together. I wonder if this means there isn’t actually overlapping vertices?

Never mind. I checked the total number of vertices after watching the next couple of lectures. My model has 8.

Ah, you have solved this problem! Great study.
That said, overlapping faces, edges and or vertices can lead to problems.
The correct solution for this challenge would be six vertices.
The are several ways to do this. In EDIT
mode you could select these four overlapping vertices and do a merge by distance. Merging four vertices into two!
