Ubuntu 24.xx and Blender problems

On all my systems I use Ubuntu Linux as far as possible. Now I recently upgraded Ubuntu to Ubuntu 24.xx. Didn’t really encounter any major problems during this installation process. However, version 24.xx has been taken off the market at this moment due to installation problems with some users. But that’s not what matters to me!

What I’m having a lot of trouble with now is that Blender can no longer find linked asset data in projects. Which actually makes the main project unusable. Objects are now missing.

I use linked Blender assets a lot. In the main project I call assets from other projects using linked assets. I do that for mesh objects, but also for poses, etc.

However, my folder structure is based on linked (virtual) folders, something like favorite files in Windows.
I think that with Ubuntu v24 these linked folders are now implemented differently. Which causes the file info in the Blender file to not be processed properly. Result, when opening a Blender file I get messages like “LIB: Mesh: ‘Astronaut.LP’ missing from” and a path name that does not exist, physically on my system.

No idea how to solve this, because I would not know how to adjust an internal file reference in Blender. For images that is of course possible, but not for internal references.

/home/fedpete/Desktop/Blender 3D/Documents/30 Blender/10 Blender 3D/90 Projects/Isometric rocket/05 Assets/Astronaut - LP.blend

is a combination of /home/fedpete/Desktop/Blender 3D the virtual (linked) folder on my desktop.
And the real physical one /home/fedpete/Documents/30 Blender/10 Blender 3D/90 Projects/Isometric rocket/05 Assets/Astronaut - LP.blend

If they have withdrawn it probably best to go back to the previous version. This may be one of the reasons they had to withdraw it.

No idea at all about Linux but that seems the logical plan.

I’m also like a fish in a cuckoo-clock when it comes to Linux - no idea what I’m doing in there! XD

That said, I do have a good idea of what you’re talking about; I recently dealt with something really similar in the Godot Multiplayer course.

I managed to find this StackExchange post; although it’s very old, it appears to still be relevant, and I think both of the proposed solutions will be useful to you depending on exactly what you’re trying to restore in each case:

Rollbacks are always an option too if you determine there is nothing else to try. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that =)

Wow! This is a feature I have never seen or even explored in Blender’s menu structure.
It’s a life saver… !

In older project days, with a simpler project structure, I would have simply added the missing object back. Using Blender’s asset append function.
But I am building up my asset library. With objects, materials, and even poses.
So an object in the main project quickly becomes complex. The mesh from project A, the rigging pose from project B, and the material from project C. Using assets in this way, I saw as a learning curve.

When I saw these missing file messages, I turned off the PC and went to watch TV. Even checking the weather forecast was more fun than this daunting experience. I had no idea how to fix this.

But this Blender feature for restoring missing files works well. I’m happy, it works again!

This is not the first time I have had problems with the asset library. Besides the issues of how it works now and what is useful. I have had a lot of problems with structuring projects. All my Blender projects used to be on my laptop. But I ran out of disk space. Then moved them to my network NAS, automatic backups etc. But access to the NAS and building the asset library was very slow (unworkable).
For performance reasons I moved all my Blender projects back to the laptop (larger HD capacity). But yes, then also asset file paths that broke. I then just recreated the asset library.

And even now I am still not satisfied. Maintaining a library is a lot of work and good planning.

I believe it was because some people had installation problems. I did just an upgrade from an old working system to a new one. They have changed the install procedure, which I didn’t need.

That’s fantastic, I’m glad I was able to help with this!

That it is; I can only imagine the redesigns you’ve gone through over the years once each existing solution needs an upgrade =)
