Tried a crate but with a cross wood inbetween

A sample crate. I used loop cuts to achieve this. If there is any other solution to achieve this let me know.

Looks good to me. You could do the inset trick that was shown in the video. also, for the slant bar, you could model it as a separate mesh (cube), and rotate 45 degrees and slide it into place. But throw a texture on that and you have a great game asset.
