Why would you care? If you plan to write academic papers (college, even more so in grad school) in scientific/mathematical language, LaTeX is the standard for math and physics and some areas of computer science, and it is readily accepted in other scientific fields. The learning curve is maybe a little higher than writing HTML by hand, but worth it. If you want to publish to academic journals in many fields (esp. math, cs, physics), many now require submissions in LaTeX. It’s free open-source software available on all major desktop platforms. Based on the TeX software written by Donald Knuth.
