While at glance it’s not a big difference. It is a huge improvement. Especially the roof arches and barrels.
It’s a good idea to fix an old project. The right grey wall, cloud use some deformations (displacement, bump), it’s still to smooth.
I likes the floor in the old one better. Because dirt (dark matter) stay in floor groves. While the tiles are shiny due to cleaning and wear.
Thanks!
Yeah, good point. Maybe I can try to rough/darken up the grooves a bit.
The scale of the bricks is better. The wood grain is still ‘cartoony’. Which may be intentional, But my personal default is to realism. lol. As Fedpete mentioned the floor, it could be a vinyl floor covering, no apparent third dimension. Again my reaction would be to make a real shaped tile and lower mortar, and copy repeat a few, rotating the texture, then array it across the area. Not a low poly approach though. There is a bit more spark, life, to the first one’s right hand window lighting that hits the barrels.
I was definitely going for photo realism, so any feedback in that direction is appreciated.
Not sure what you mean. Would you mind elaborating in this?
Well that’s no good. Definitely supposed to be 3D tiles. It’s an image texture with bump and normal maps. I’ll definitely need to take a closer look at it. Thanks.
Yeah I liked that about the first one too! That got lost when I redid the texture. I used the same images for textures, but tweaked the nodes. Maybe I can play with the roughness or normals a bit.
Thanks! The bricks had always bugged me. The scale was wrong and they didn’t line up across the seams.
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it.
The grain is too contrasty. Far too big in scale too. If you looked at real barrels you would know they are wooden but would not see the grain practically, unless you got close. Here we see the grain 20 yards away! Likewise to the ‘gaps’ between the staves. If they were as pronounced as yours no wine would still be in the barrels!
Lots to look at on line, from, new to old and thrown out to be used as garden furniture. When in use they are nearer new than the ‘olde worlde’ garden ornament. Same with the tables and benches. Whatever era, carpentry was good! Been skilled in making wood items for an awfully long time. If you have a derelict scene then rotting and cracked wooden items are in keeping. bearing inmind this is a very wealthy situation with all that booze. Be it monastry or palace, the furniture would be better than a rustic hovel.
Oh and that particular image, shows what I expect most cellar barrels have, some form of identifying lettering, marks, on the end.
Again this is very much my outlook, its perfectly reasonable to adopt any style for artistic effects.
You raise some good points. I may try some smoother textures and see which I prefer.
I don’t recall seeing the original version, but I’m liking the improvements with your new version, though FedPete and NP5 both made some good points.
I like the improvements, too and also the “cartoony” touch, unless you go for photorealism (I do not).
Sometimes I do go for photo realism, and I thought I was here too. But now I’m not sure . I like the wood (though I liked the original reflections a bit better), and I thought it was pretty realistic, but now I think it’s probably not, but I kinda like it anyway.
So… OK, yes, I was going for a slightly cartoony look all along!
