Just had to try something out since I couldn’t find a compatible Cardboard app for my Galaxy Note 3.
Downloaded the SteamVR Plugin from Asset Store, and replaced the GvrViewerMain from Android with the [CameraRig] found under SteamVR\Prefabs, and everything worked immediately and flawlessly 
Head camera worked fine, and the controllers were there - but I have yet to make them control something…
