Section 4, Lesson 78: Boolean Modifier

I decided to use a UV Sphere to create the notch. I really like the look, however my only concern is that the UV sphere I used has more geometry than the piece itself. Will that have a drastic affect to the overall performance?

No!

performance isn’t a problem if your PC hasn’t problems with it. Some encounter slowness at 3M vertices another an 8M. The number of polygons isn’t a big factor for Cycles, but render samples do!

Eevee will be relatively faster because it rasterizes polygons.

Geometry differences are only important when you apply texture images. Or if you want to have a clean object mesh. But for the chess set lessons, not a problem at all.
