I did my top a little differently which I think looks pretty cool (a little edgy like the rest of my models) using bool and a cube that I extruded into a cross.

Yes it is another way. probably not suggested in the course as it covers boolean operations later. Plus it is likely to make messier topology in an easy situation not to use it.
