Procedural marble

Naa, this didn’t turn out the way I’d like. five (5!) blender crashes later, loosing some of the work on the wooden surrounding frame… NOT really marble is it… :expressionless:

Revenge on the half-failed marble, here is a procedural plank that’s not entirely to clean

hi, i really like your scenes and objects. I wonder ambient color (blue like your chess scene and yellowish in plank scene), how can i do that? is it about only lamp? :face_with_raised_eyebrow: thanks. :grinning:

Wow! These look really good! Can I ask how you made it look so real? My renders looked nothing like this :joy:

I cheat

Instead of using blender render as instructed I use Cycles. If I remember correctly you will be introduced to Cycles render in a few lessons… Learning from Blender Guru on YouTube and a few others I also apply a couple of techniques related to photo-realism.

Look at it as a preview of what you will learn in this course

Oh, and the plank is an experiment I did with procedural wood, basically applying fractals (mathematical textures) to the wood grain, surface structure and dirt, in several layers. If I had half the talent for Sculpting that I have for the Cycles Materials I would be happy. Still struggling there…

First of all I cheat since I use Cycles before introduced in the course… sorry.

In the chess board I use the world settings to give a blue tint, and a spotlight.

In the plank I have default gray world but lights and reflection from the ‘floor’ is yellowish. Cycles Engine give this a better result than Blender Engine.

A good way to get natural colors is to use the Blackbody converter to set the color-temperature on the lights.

This is available in Cycles and you will learn about that later in the course. I just happened to know this before…

Oh, just saw something, can you see him? Darth Vader hiding in the shadows…

Funny how the mind works…

Don’t worry, you will get there.

  • 3-point lighting
  • Filmic colors
  • Combining several techniques for photo-realism

In the picture, to strong background overwhelms the lamp.
Tune down until you see the mix…

… takes some practice, s’all…

this scene looks so good @Jonas_Printzen! for an instant I thought it was in internal render
Indeed cycles over internal render is so superior which IDK why it wasn’t discontinued yet, even now w/ eevee coming soon.
